It achieves its mission through numerous activities, such as organizing temporary exhibitions and presenting items from its permanent collection. Moreover, there is a strong commitment to providing tailored educational programs for individuals of all ages, including both children and adults.

History Of The Museum

The Masur Museum of Art has a rich and intriguing history of how it originated. Let’s dive into these details to understand the site better:

  • Originally built in 1929 as a private residence, this modified Tudor estate was a creation of Clarence Edward Slagle, a lumberman, who had it constructed for his wife, Mabel.
  • The house's construction materials, including Indiana limestone and Pennsylvania blue slate, were transported via various waterways to the picturesque Ouachita River, which flows behind the estate. The Slagle family affectionately named the residence "Grey Gables."
  • The property initially featured an English-style rose garden and a lawn stretching down to the river.
  • However, the construction of the levee system via the Army Corps of Engineers in 1930 led to the relocation of the home's carriage house just twenty feet behind the new levee.
  • In 1934, following Clarence Slagle's passing, his widow sold the property to the Masur family. Sigmund, Beatrice Masur, and their children Sylvian, Jack, and Bertha Marie made this estate their home until the 1960s.
  • In 1963, the Masur children generously donated the property to the City of Monroe, intending to transform it into a fine art museum.

The museum's early years saw exhibitions and art education organized through the dedication of docents and volunteers. In 1974, the Twin City Art Foundation was established to provide additional support to the museum, offering funding for exhibitions, educational programs, and the growth of the permanent collection.

Today, the Masur Museum of Art operates as a collaboration between the City of Monroe and the Twin City Art Foundation. It serves as a division of the Department of Community Affairs within the City of Monroe, preserving and showcasing the region's rich artistic heritage.
